Medical laboratory technicians work in hospital and private laboratories (clinical or research) or physician office labs. A career as a laboratory technician can be rewarding and meaningful because you get to help physicians and surgeons determine a patient's diagnosis. The Medical Lab is the backbone of any hospital, either a small nursing home or a large corporate hospital. However much a doctor can assess the patient, he or she cannot give proper treatment without the benefit of laboratory results.

He/she will have gained basic laboratory skills required for entry-level positions in these and other emerging laboratory fields, such as molecular diagnostics. The level of analyses performed may range from point of care testing to complex testing, involving all major areas of the clinical laboratory.
The MLT will have diverse functions in areas of pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical processes. In addition, the MLT will have responsibilities related to information processing, training and quality control within the laboratory. The three pillars of Medical Laboratory technology are Biochemistry, Microbiology and Pathology. The Medical Lab Technologists are trained to have basic knowledge in these three pillars of Laboratory Medicine.

It's possible to get an entry-level role as a laboratory technician without a four-year degree, making it an appealing option for those looking to quickly and affordably enter the workforce. The opportunities for Medical Lab Technicians are limitless considering the very important role labs play in supporting clinicians.
At career entry, the MLT will be able to perform routine clinical laboratory tests done in hematology, chemistry, immunohematology, microbiology, immunology and coagulation Such professionals can find themselves employed in private laboratories, hospitals, blood donor centers, emergency centers, and clinics. They can also find jobs in crime laboratories, research facilities, pharmaceutical companies, universities, and defense.

Further, students also can pursue PG programme in Medical Laboratory Technology and after successful completion of PG, they are employed as Lecturers/ Instructors in the teaching institutions of Medical Laboratory Technology. They can also start and run diagnostic centers along with the medical professionals.

ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION

  • " A pass in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry & Biology or Botany & Zoology subject or an equivalent with 12 years of Schooling from a recognized Board of University with minimum 35% marks in each subjects separately including English for all categories". " Home science along with Physics, Chemistry & Biology or Botany & Zoology is eligible.

AGE LIMIT FOR ADMISSION

  • A candidate should have completed the age of 17 years at the time of admission or would complete the said age on or before 31 December of the year of admission to the B.Sc. DEGREE COURSES UNDER ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES.

MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION

  • English shall be the Medium of Instruction for all the Subjects of study and for examinations of the B.Sc. DEGREE COURSES UNDER ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES

Admission Requirements

The following certificates / documents have to be submitted along with duly filled Application form (Originals + 4 Photostat Copies):
  • Transfer Certificate from the Institution last studied.
  • SSLC mark statement.
  • HSC/Pre-Degree/ AISSCE/ ICSE/ CBSE /Intermediate or equivalent mark statement.
  • Migration Certificate for the students who have passed other than HSC Examination of Tamil Nadu.
  • Eligibility Certificate obtained from The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University, Chennai (For students who have passed their Qualifying examination other than HSC Examination, Tamil Nadu)
  • Community Certificate (except OC candidates)
  • Medical fitness certificate
  • Passport Size Photographs (5 Nos.)
