Medical laboratory technicians work in hospital and private laboratories (clinical or research) or physician office labs. The opportunities for Medical Lab Technicians are limitless considering the very important role labs play in supporting clinicians. Further, students also can pursue PG programme in Medical Laboratory Technology and after successful completion of PG, they are employed as Lecturers/ Instructors in the teaching institutions of Medical Laboratory Technology. They can also start and run diagnostic centers along with the medical professionals.
The MLT will have diverse functions in areas of pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical processes. In addition, the MLT will have responsibilities related to information processing, training and quality control within the laboratory. The three pillars of Medical Laboratory technology are Biochemistry, Microbiology and Pathology. The Medical Lab Technologists are trained to have basic knowledge in these three pillars of Laboratory Medicine.
At career entry, the MLT will be able to perform routine clinical laboratory tests done in hematology, chemistry, immunohematology, microbiology, immunology and coagulation Such professionals can find themselves employed in private laboratories, hospitals, blood donor centers, emergency centers, and clinics.
