Chennai hospital gets Kovai man's liver

  • Five major organs of a youth who died in a road accident were harvested at a private hospital here on Tuesday.

    Organs of M Rajagopal (25), a resident of Sivanadapuram near Sarvanampatty were harvested at Sree Abirami Hospital where he was admitted on Monday night. Rajagopal succumbed to the injuries and was declared brain dead.

    Hospital authorities said Rajagopal, a BSc Computer Science graduate, met with the accident when he was returning from Echanari temple. Doctors at the hospital consulted his parents Maruthachalam and Kalavathi, who consented to the cadaver organ donation.

    Dr R Senthil Kumar, member of the board of directors at the hospital said five major organs were harvested from the cadaver with the due permission from relatives of the deceased.

    Of the two kidneys harvested, one was given to SPT Hospital, Coimbatore and the other taken to the department of nephrology at Abirami Hospital.

    While the harvested liver was given to Global Hospital, Chennai, the eyes were given away to Aravind Eye Hospital, Coimbatore.

    The multi organ harvesting was performed by a team of doctors including doctors PP Periyaswamy, Urologist, R Senthil Kumar, Balakrishnan, Sampath, Thirumaliswamy, Vivekanandham, Sekar Michel, anesthetist and Santhanam, anesthetist.
